Currently studying towards a Bachelor of Design at Unitec, Clare McLean's ceramic installation can be seen in relation to a long established tradition of abstracting fruits and vegetables. The practice of casting produce in the ceramic medium dates to ancient China and reached a highpoint in eighteenth century Europe. McLean departs from the practice of idealising real vegetable matter and instead produces straightforward repetitive copies of a more vernacular fruit, the plastic tomato sauce dispenser.
